       My Philosophy of Education

"By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn." -- Latin Proverb

I have often been encouraged by my family, friends and peers to become a teacher. My family has always been a precious part of my life. My parents have provided sound guidance and encouraged me to express myself creatively. With a father who was a professional enrichment teacher and a mother who currently tutors adolescents, it was inevitable that I too would endeavour to teach. For me teaching includes a great responsibility, which I take seriously. I have always felt that when teaching, communicating a clear message is a key to success. Creating and maintaining a positive and engaging learning environment in the classroom is also of utmost importance. At the heart of education lies a vital connection that exists between the teacher and the student. The transmission and reception of knowledge can occur in remarkable ways yet nothing is more effective than students 'discovering' meaning for themselves. There is something magical when students construct their own real and meaningful understanding of a lesson. I have experienced that unique joy; knowing I have inspired others to grow and explore new possibilities. This is why I feel compelled to teach.

I subscribe to the main tenants of the 'Constructivist Approach' to education. I agree with Jean Piaget's position that individuals construct their own meaning and understanding from the surrounding world. I feel that the 'Constructivist Approach' becomes more robust by considering that learning is also shaped by social and cultural factors. I have considered Lev Vygotsky's theory of 'Social Constructivism' and agree. I feel that 'social interaction' and 'cultural context' significantly impact on the learning process. It is important to create and lead a socially vibrant classroom culture where the interaction between students will itself contribute to the children's learning experience. Incorporating various co-operative and partner-based learning strategies is just one of many ways to help facilitate this social interaction. Cultural diversity abounds in our modern society and I feel it is vital to understand student values and attitudes in perspective to their cultural background. Behaviour can often be misinterpreted due to cultural traditions and practices. Diversity is to be celebrated and different cultural contexts must be explored and shared with the entire class. Collectively we will all benefit from the discovery of different social ideals and perspectives.

Learning can occur on many levels and in many forms. I value Howard Gardner's theory of 'Multiple Intelligences' and through careful planning will appeal to all types of intelligences and learning styles. In this way every student will be given the opportunity to succeed. Thinking and questioning skills can be categorized in a hierarchical order. My aim is to enhance student comprehension by providing them opportunities to apply, analyse, synthesize, and evaluate their expanding knowledge.

The practice of teaching has developed into both a science and rich art form. My aim is to create a safe and nurturing environment for students. This can only be achieved by maintaining a positive immersive atmosphere of intrigue and challenge for my students. Showing care and respect for each student will allow their sense of trust and respect to grow. It is important to be fresh, creative and innovative when planning lessons and activities. Students who are stimulated and engaged will always perform much better. It is my duty to teach 'lifelong learning skills' in my classroom. By placing responsibility on the students themselves they will discover how to be personally accountable for their own learning as well as the consequences of their actions. Through this practice I aim to develop their self-discipline skills.

Finally, I recognize that as a 'teacher' I too am a 'learner'. I have always had a strong desire to 'know more' and have maintained a keen sense of inquiry from an early age. I will continue to look forward to learning together with my students.
